Shintake led the design, construction and operation of the SACLA X-ray free electron laser, a feat that won him the 2014 Gersch Budker Prize. In 2015, he was awarded the Optics and Quantum Electronics Achievement Award (Takuma Award) from the Japan Society of Applied Physics.
