Butterflies Reveal What A “Healthy” Forest May Be Hiding

Different butterfly groups respond differently to habitat loss and human activity, offering scientists a new way to monitor ecosystem health.

AsianScientist (Aug. 26, 2026) –A forest may look healthy to us, but its butterflies can tell a different story.

A new study published in Insect Science has found that different groups of butterflies respond in unique ways to habitat loss, climate, and human activity. The findings could help scientists monitor biodiversity, assess forest restoration and identify habitats that need greater protection.

An international research team, led by Professor Xiushan Li at China West Normal University, studied butterfly communities in the western Qinling Mountains of China. The region is a biodiversity hotspot with more than 400 butterfly species, almost as many species found across Europe.

Decades of logging, agricultural expansion, and habitat fragmentation had significantly changed the landscape, making the region ideal for investigating how butterflies respond to environmental change.

Not all butterflies respond in the same way

The researchers classified the butterflies into three functional groups based on their life cycle and ecological traits: Univoltine specialists produce one generation per year and depend on specific habitats or food sources; bivoltine specialists produce two generations per year and also have more specific habitat needs. Generalists, meanwhile, can thrive in a wider range of habitats.

This three-group classification of butterflies offers a more detailed understanding of butterfly communities than the traditional specialist-versus-generalist approach.

The study found that univoltine specialists were the most sensitive to environmental change. Their numbers were strongly affected by habitat quality and the availability of food.

“By classifying butterfly communities according to their diet, life cycle, and mobility, we gained a much clearer understanding of how different species respond to environmental change,” the researchers said.

Human disturbance reduced butterfly numbers overall, while higher elevations supported fewer species. Areas with more plant resources, however, supported larger butterfly populations.

Specialists were particularly dependent on suitable habitat conditions, while generalist species were influenced more by their ability to move through the landscape.

Restoring forests can have unintended effects

The findings also highlight the importance of the conservation of specialist butterflies. Several rare species in the Qinling Mountains, including Bhutanitis thaidina and Luehdorfia chinensis huashanensis, are already protected in China. Another species, Luehdorfia taibai, remains critically endangered but is not yet nationally protected.

Increasing forest canopy density following restoration has reduced suitable habitat for these specialist butterflies, contributing to population declines and local extinctions. The study suggests that conservation efforts should consider the specific needs of different butterfly groups rather than treating all species alike.

The researchers say that conserving univoltine specialist butterflies should be a priority, with targeted habitat management helping to safeguard biodiversity while improving the long-term health and resilience of forest ecosystems.
