Celebrating Science’s Unsung Heroes: Lab Techs

The Asian Scientist Lab Tech of the Year 2019 award shines the spotlight on the laboratory technicians who make invaluable contributions to Singapore’s research landscape.

AsianScientist (Jan. 14, 2019) – Although laboratory technicians are essential to the smooth running of any lab, they often do not receive the recognition that they deserve. To highlight the contributions of these essential personnel, Asian Scientist Magazine has organized the inaugural Lab Tech of the Year 2019 award, a competition open to all lab techs living and working in Singapore.

From today, supervisors may nominate their lab techs online at www.asianscientist.com/labtech. A total of ten winners will be selected by a panel of judges including Professor Wong Tien Yin, deputy group CEO (research & education) at SingHealth; Professor Daniela Rhodes, director of the Institute of Structural Biology at Nanyang Technological University; Professor Dean Ho, provost’s chair professor at the National University of Singapore and co-founder and chairman of KYAN Therapeutics; Dr. Juliana Chan, editor-in-chief of Asian Scientist Magazine; and Dr. Ryan Chong, director and regional head of channel management at Abcam Singapore.

Each winner will receive a S$500 cash prize, a certificate of recognition, an Asian Scientist Magazine goodie bag that includes Sydney Brenner’s 10-on-10: The Chronicles of Evolution, a book published under the Wildtype Books imprint owned by Wildtype Media Group. In addition, each Lab Tech of the Year 2019 awardee will win for their lab discounts from the main sponsor Abcam and S$500 in book vouchers from World Scientific Publishing Company.

One special winner will be selected to receive an additional prize of a 3D2N stay at Banyan Tree Bintan, courtesy of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts. The awards will be presented at a ceremony held in April 2019.

“Few labs would be able to function effectively without outstanding lab techs. We organized this competition to give supervisors a chance to show appreciation for their lab techs, win some attractive prizes and generally have fun together outside the lab,” said Chan. “What are you waiting for? Nominate your lab tech today!”
