- Timer

Keeping time is an invaluable skill for a scientist. Rummage around the pockets of any lab coat and you’re almost sure to find a countdown timer in one of them. Experiment protocols usually state incubation times that should be adhered to for optimal results, so having a timer on hand really helps to make sure you don’t bungle an important step in the protocol. If you intend to gift a fellow researcher a fancy countdown timer, it would be a supremely considerate gesture to also gift wrap some spare batteries for the timer.
