EmTech Singapore’s 10 Under 35 Innovators Revealed

Ten young innovators have made it to EmTech Singapore’s Innovators Under 35 list, selected from over 100 applicants from Asia and Australasia.

AsianScientist (Nov. 20, 2014) – EmTech Singapore revealed this week ten finalists of its annual Innovators under 35 (TR35) regional list, selected from over 100 applicants from 16 countries across Asia and Australasia.

Each of the ten finalists will present a three-minute elevator pitch about their research at EmTech Singapore, to be held from 27-28 January, 2015.

The finalists are:

  1. Rikky Muller, Chief Executive Officer, Cortera Neurotechnologies, Inc. Muller founded Cortera Neurotechnologies to develop implantable devices that feel and act natural.
  2. Peh Ruey Feng, Program Director of Singapore-Stanford Biodesign, A*STAR. Peh aims to significantly reduce the overall cost of hemodialysis at end-stage kidney failure.
  3. Zhou Lihan, Co-Founder and CTO, MiRXES Pte Ltd. Zhou and three colleagues founded MIRXES with the vision of creating accurate, affordable and non-invasive cancer detection tests.
  4. Yeung Ying Yeung, Associate Professor, National University of Singapore. Yeung has developed a novel asymmetric halogenation reaction for the preparation of drug molecules.
  5. Panu Sukitpaneenit, Membrane Scientist, Koch Membrane Systems, Inc. Sukitpaneenit’s research centers on designing novel and high separation membrane materials and technologies.
  6. Chua Pei Wen Vivien, Assistant Professor, National University of Singapore. Chua is developing a state-of-the-art coupled ocean-hydrologic modeling tool to investigate the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic influences in coastal zones.
  7. Li Guangda, Founder & CTO, Visenze. Visenze provides a sophisticated visual search and recognition platform serving hundreds of millions of queries each day.
  8. Benjamin Tee, Stanford Biodesign Global Innovation Fellow, A*STAR. Tee has developed flexible and stretchable electronic skin-like sensors that capture some of the properties of human skin.
  9. Shawn Tan, Research Scientist, Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, A*STAR. Tan recently demonstrated the world’s smallest reproduction of a painting in full-color, which represents a leap in resolution beyond the state-of-the-art.
  10. Dario Poletti, Assistant Professor, Singapore University of Technology and Design & SUTD-MIT International Design Center. Poletti’s research focuses on many-body quantum dynamics and quantum open systems.

Judges of the competition include Dr. Martin Dunn, Associate Provost (Research) of the Singapore University of Technology and Design; and Mr. Bill Liu, Chairman and Managing Partner of Stream Global Pte Ltd.

Dr. Juliana Chan, editor-in-chief of Asian Scientist Magazine, is one of the judges and a TR35 finalist from last year. She said: “This list represents a snapshot of Asia’s up-and-coming technologists and innovators. It was a challenge to narrow down 100 names to the 10 you see here.”

All ten finalists are now eligible to be considered for MIT Technology Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35 list, due in October 2015.

EmTech Singapore, organized by Koelnmesse Singapore, is a regional version of MIT Technology Review’s EmTech showcase. Designed to inspire, EmTech is an opportunity to glimpse the future of technologies.
