20 Years Of KAIST-Samsung Partnership

KAIST and Samsung Heavy Industries celebrate 20 years of co-operation with a ceremony at the Korean university.

AsianScientist (Oct. 29, 2014) – Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of their university-industry cooperation in shipbuilding and ocean technology research.

Twenty years of cooperation has seen the exchange of technological advice through the appointment of advisory professors as well as the organisation of special lectures, small-scale research projects, consignment research projects and joint courses for research and design personnel. The partnership has helped Samsung develop the technologies, while providing KAIST students with valuable industry experience.

One successful product of the collaboration began as a small-scale research project in liquefied natural gas (LNG) with US$4,800 in funding. From there, the project grew into a large-scale research project with almost of US$3 million in funding.

As a result, the researchers were able to develop a secondary barrier for LNG carriers which eventually lowered ship manufacturing costs tremendously. Their research was recognized by Lloyd‘s Register, a global engineering, technical and business services organisation that seeks to promote quality certification.

In 2003, KAIST-SHI partnership received a presidential citation from the University-Industry Cooperation Competition organized by the Federation of Korean Industries.

KAIST and SHI intend to further grow their collaboration, with plans to develop it into Korea’s leading university-industry cooperation program.

“Our programs to focus on solving industrial problems have turned out quite successful,” Professor Bae Choong-Sik of KAIST said. “By expanding the current cooperation, we aim to make it an exemplary program that contributes to Korea’s shipbuilding and ocean plant industries.”
