Real Time Cancer Diagnosis During Endoscopy

Singapore-based medtech startup Endofotonics has developed an in vivo molecular diagnostic system that can diagnose cancer in real time.

AsianScientist (Apr. 25, 2014) – Singapore-based medtech startup Endofotonics has developed an in vivo molecular diagnostic system that can diagnose cancer in real time.

The molecular diagnostic system, called IMDXTM, enables objective cancer diagnosis to be made almost instantaneously during endoscopy, which is the process of looking inside the human body. This allows medical interventions to be made promptly, reducing the waiting time for standard diagnoses which could take up to a week.

“We are extremely excited at the prospect of bringing molecular diagnosis into the body. The objective real time diagnosis made possible will cause a paradigm shift in how diagnosis is made and significantly reduce cancer deaths and burden,” says Ms Florence Leong, CEO and co-founder of Endofotonics.

Based on promising preliminary data from 500 cancer patients across a diverse range of cancer types, Endofotonics has plans to translate the lab prototype into a commercial prototype that can be manufactured in accordance to regulatory requirements.

Endofotonics’ other two co-founders are Associate Professor Huang Zhiwei from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore; and Professor Lawrence Ho from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and National University Hospital.
