AsianScientist (Oct. 7, 2011) – The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011-2012, released on Thursday, October 6, has revealed some shake-ups at the top, with Harvard University dropping to second place and the California Institute of Technology taking the top spot on the table.
Stanford University, which was fourth last year, is now tied for second place with Harvard University; and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has dropped from third place to seventh.
The university rankings, developed in concert with data provider Thomson Reuters, received input from more than 50 leading figures in the sector from 15 countries across all continents.
400 universities were ranked using 13 separate performance indicators under five headline categories: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (2.5%), and international outlook (7.5%),
In this year’s rankings, Japan led the Asian region with University of Tokyo (#30), a drop from the past year where it was ranked #26 in the world.
Next in Asia was the University of Hong Kong (#34), which fell 13 places from #21 last year, and the National University of Singapore (#40), which fell six spots from #34 in 2011.
Peking University at #49 was the fourth and final Asian university in the Top 50, a slide of 12 spots from #37 last year.
