AsianScientist (Sep. 5, 2011) – The QS World University Rankings 2011/12, released on Sunday by Quacquarelli Symonds, has shown the gains made by Asian universities on this global ranking table.
For this report, six indicators of academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty (20%), faculty student ratio (20%), and proportion of international students (5%) and faculty (5%), are drawn together to form an international ranking of universities.
Published annually in Sept/Oct, it ranks the top 400 universities in five broad faculty areas: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management.
This year, Cambridge University ended Harvard’s six-year lead in last year’s rankings, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was second runner-up.
However, the main up-and-coming region is East Asia, particularly Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, said Mr. Ben Sowter, Head of the QS Intelligence Unit which compiles university rankings and related metrics.
In Asia, Japan and Singapore held strong positions, with University of Tokyo in 25th, Kyoto University in 32nd, and National University of Singapore in 28th.
From Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong (22), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (37), and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (40) also dominated the Asian table.
Korea’s Seoul National University (SNU) came in at 42nd, in front of Osaka University and Peking University, which placed 45th and 46th, respectively. Tsinghua nearly tied with Peking University, in 47th place.
