Liu won the 2024 Ramanujan Prize for young mathematicians from developing countries for his fundamental contributions to p-adic Hodge theory, especially his foundational study of relative p-adic Hodge theory and his work on rigidity and the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence for p-adic local systems.
Liu’s current research interests are arithmetic geometry and algebraic number theory, with a focus on p-adic aspects of number theory and arithmetic geometry. He is considered to be one of the foremost arithmetic geometers working in China. Liu’s work has received a number of recognitions, including the 2020 China Youth Science and Technology Award, the 2019 Tencent Xplorer prize and the 2017 National Science Fund Award for Distinguished Young Scholars.
