The University Of Tokyo Only Asian Uni In ARWU Top 20

The University of Tokyo is back in the top 20 for this year’s Academic Ranking of World Universities report, after climbing up one spot from 21st position last year.

AsianScientist (Aug. 19, 2016) – The University of Tokyo just barely made it back in the top 20 for this year’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) report, after climbing up one spot from 21st position last year.

The rest of the spots in the top 20 were dominated by universities from the UK and the US, including one university from Switzerland.

Since 2003, the annual list of top 500 universities is decided based on six objective indicators: the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly-cited researchers; the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index; and per capita performance.

There are three Asian universities breaking into the top 100 list for the first time: Tsinghua University (58), Peking University (71), and the National University of Singapore (83). This is also the first time that universities from China and Singapore are making an appearance in the top 100.

The other Asian universities in the top 100 are all from Japan: Kyoto University (32), Nagoya University (72), and Osaka University (96).

That is not to say that there is a lack of Asian universities in the rankings overall: there are a total of 41 universities from China, six from Hong Kong, 16 from Japan, three from Malaysia, two from Singapore, 11 from South Korea, and seven from Taiwan.
