AsianScientist (May 24, 2011) – The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has topped the 2011 QS Asian University Rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds, followed by the University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Tokyo.
For this year’s rankings, a total of 437 universities in 14 countries including Hong Kong were evaluated.
Korea’s Seoul National University came in at sixth place, while KAIST and POSTECH were ranked 11th and 12th.
The world’s most populous nations, India and China, have had strikingly different results on this list. Top Chinese universities such as Peking and Tsinghua were well-liked by their academic peers and employers, with Peking University at 13th, Tsinghua at 16th, and Fudan at 21st.
By contrast, India’s top institution, IIT Kanpur, ranked at 36th followed by IIT Delhi at 37th. India has only 11 entries here compared to China’s 40, plus seven from Hong Kong. This is worth noting considering India’s use of English as its teaching medium – the selling point of Hong Kong and Singapore in the Asian education market.
13 countries are represented in this year’s rankings, two more than last year with the inclusion of the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh and four universities in Pakistan.
Although the results show excellence to be widely spread through Asia, countries such as Vietnam and Sri Lanka remain conspicuously absent on the ranking table.
