AsianScientist (Dec. 12, 2011) – Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr announced last week a new AU$249 million package designed to help Australian industries become more competitive and create new job opportunities.
The Industry Transformation Research program and cadetship package will provide more than 1,000 engineering cadetships over the next four years to provide students with work experience in manufacturing and other Australian industries.
New research training centers will be established to provide quality industrial doctoral and postdoctoral training for up to 600 PhD students each year.
The program will also fund new research hubs that will bring researchers and industry representatives together.
These new measures are part of the Labor Government’s commitment to better align Australian research efforts with the needs of industry in key sectors such as metals, food, energy, textiles, building, and automotive.
