Widely known as the “Cyclone Man of India,” Mohapatra received the 2025 United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction for transforming cyclone forecasting and early-warning systems in India. His efforts have made life-saving weather forecasts more accurate and accessible to vulnerable coastal communities, significantly reducing casualties and strengthening disaster preparedness across the region.
