Vithanage was awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Earth, Climate and Environmental Sciences, becoming the first Sri Lankan scientist to earn this distinction. She was recognized for pioneering research on converting biological waste into biochar and nano-biochar, innovative materials used for environmental remediation, pollution control and sustainable waste management, advancing practical solutions for global environmental challenges.
