
3. Japan shines in subject rankings
This year, the Land of the Rising Sun put up its best performance yet, with the University of Tokyo placing sixth in the Asian University Rankings. By leading translational research efforts like finding safer antibiotics, the Japanese institution also featured in the top 100 list for STEM subject rankings.
In the clinical and health arena, Kyoto University and the University of Tokyo ranked 24th and 27th, respectively—emerging as Asia’s second and third best performers next to NUS at 18th. Both institutions also showcased their excellence in the physical sciences, and together with Osaka University, they rounded out Japan’s three representatives in the life sciences rankings.
4. Asia stands out in computer science and engineering
With China and Singapore leading the charge, the region is thriving in the technology sector. Both nations reached the illustrious top 10 in subject specialties, as NUS placed eighth in computer science and Peking University came ninth in the engineering rankings.
Throughout the list, other Asian countries are also making waves. The Indian Institute of Science, for instance, entered the conversation at 94th in engineering and 96th in computer science. Moreover, a remarkable 30 percent of the top ranked universities in engineering hail from Asia, including five from Hong Kong, six from South Korea and 10 from China.
These trends reflect a growing demand for tech roles across industries. Accordingly, the academe is fueling the sector with a steady pipeline of talent and relevant research, such as developing robotic devices for gripping objects of all shapes and sizes.
