How To Lift The Lockdown: A Chat With Pandemic Expert Dr. Gabriel Leung (VIDEO)

Check out our next Wildtype Expert Opinion webinar with leading epidemiologist Dr. Gabriel Leung from the University of Hong Kong.

AsianScientist (May 13, 2020) – In late 2002, Hong Kong was ground zero for the spread of an unusual pneumonia that later became known as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Nearly two decades later, it appears that history has repeated itself. Though the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, is markedly different from its predecessor, its emergence indicates that COVID-19 will not be the last global pandemic.

How have past pandemics shaped our response to COVID-19? What lessons can we learn from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic?

Join our editor in chief Dr. Rebecca Tan on May 20, 2020 as she chats with one of Asia’s top public health specialists, Dr. Gabriel Leung.

Currently the Dean of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Dr. Leung led the Hong Kong’s government efforts against the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. His research has defined the epidemiology of three notable viral outbreaks, including SARS in 2003, H7N9 influenza in 2013 and now, COVID-19. Leung is also an elected member of the US National Academy of Medicine and the founding co-director of HKU’s WHO Collaborating Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Control.

In this session, Dr. Leung will discuss leadership lessons from Hong Kong’s response to previous pandemics and how countries can go about lifting their public health measures in a safe and sustainable way.
