Chew Chih Chiang Appointed New CEO Of A*STAR

Rear Admiral Frederick Chew Chih Chiang will take over from Mr Lim Chuan Poh who has served as A*STAR chairman since April 1, 2007.

AsianScientist (Feb. 1, 2019) – The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore, has announced Rear Admiral Frederick Chew Chih Chiang as its new CEO. Chew is currently deputy secretary (technology) at Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and will take over the reins from current A*STAR chairman Mr. Lim Chuan Poh on April 1, 2019.

Under Lim’s leadership, A*STAR helped advance Singapore’s research and development sector and secure partnerships with global industry leaders. His tenure saw the establishment of new research facilities in Singapore, creating job opportunities for Singaporeans and driving economic growth.

Lim’s successor, Chew, has held various key positions in MINDEF and the Singapore Armed Forces. As deputy secretary (technology) in MINDEF, RADM Chew was instrumental in optimizing the Defence Technology ecosystem and strengthening MINDEF’s partnership with industry. He also currently serves as a board member of the Defence Science & Technology Agency and DSO National Laboratories, and will be appointed as a board member of A*STAR from April 1, 2019.

As A*STAR CEO, Chew will formulate A*STAR’s strategic goals, engage key government and industry stakeholders, drive the implementation of A*STAR’s strategies, initiatives and programs and build A*STAR’s organizational capabilities.

“I would like to welcome Frederick (Chew) into the MTI family… Frederick will be able to take A*STAR to greater heights and further its mission of advancing scientific discovery and technological innovation, to create economic growth and improve the lives of Singaporeans,” said Mr. Loh Khum Yean, permanent secretary for Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry.
