HKU Confers Two Professors With Honorary University Fellowships

Professors in geotechnical engineering and orthopedic surgery were conferred Honorary University Fellowships by the University of Hong Kong.

AsianScientist (Sep. 27, 2018) – Two veteran researchers in Hong Kong have been awarded Honorary University Fellowships by the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Honorary University Fellowships are conferred to individuals in recognition of their contributions to the University and society.

Professor Chow Shew Ping, a distinguished professor of orthopedic surgery and a respected leader in Hong Kong’s higher education sector, was conferred the Fellowship for his contributions to upper limb surgery and microsurgery, with over 150 publications on these areas. He performed the first successful microsurgical replantation of a severed thumb in Hong Kong in 1977, and his experimental repair of blood vessels of 0.15 mm diameter is still a world record.

Chow is currently a fellow of the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgery and of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. He has been involved with many voluntary and charity activities and has worked as a volunteer surgeon around the world and in Hong Kong. He is the Honorary President of the Hong Kong Physical Handicapped and Able-Bodied Association and was involved as advisor to Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

The second recipient of the Fellowship is Professor Lee Chack Fan, a distinguished professor of geotechnical engineering and a renowned leader in Hong Kong’s higher education sector. From 1994 to his retirement in 2015, he has served HKU as a chair professor, pro-vice-chancellor (research), pro-vice-chancellor (university relations) and director of HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education. He is currently emeritus professor and deputy chairman of the HKU Foundation and remains active in public service and has served on numerous government committees.
