NUS Scores THE Asian Ranking Hat Trick

For the third time since 2013, the National University of Singapore has been hailed as Asia’s top university by the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings.

AsianScientist (Feb. 15, 2018) – According to the 2018 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine’s Asia University Rankings, the National University of Singapore (NUS) is Asia’s top university, retaining its position for the third year running since the introduction of the category in 2013. In the latest results, the University has improved its performance in almost all areas of the ranking, namely in teaching, research, citation impact and knowledge transfer.

Now in its sixth year, the THE Asia University Rankings includes 359 universities in Asia. It uses the same 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments. The weightings have been recalibrated to reflect the priorities of Asian institutions.

“We are delighted that NUS continues to be Asia’s best in the latest rankings by the Times Higher Education,” said NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye. “This is an affirmation of the University’s strong progress as a leading global centre of education and research. It is also a strong recognition of the high quality work accomplished by our team of faculty, staff and students.”

He added that as the higher education landscape continues to evolve rapidly, NUS aims to intensify its efforts in nurturing future-ready graduates and expand lifelong education initiatives to benefit its alumni and Singaporeans. NUS will also deepen the translational impact of its research and foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

“Congratulations to NUS for holding the number one position in Times Higher Education’s Asia University Rankings for the third successive year,” said Mr Phil Baty, Editorial Director, Global Rankings, Times Higher Education.

“The achievement is particularly impressive as it comes against a background of increasingly intense competition, especially from China, and of course the Times Higher Education rankings evaluate universities across a rigorous and balanced range of metrics covering not just research excellence, but also innovation, internationalization and teaching excellence too. So to take the number one position is an outstanding achievement,” Baty added.
