FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AsianScientist (Jun. 20, 2017) – Dr. Jorge Cham, creator of the wildly popular Piled Higher and Deeper webcomic (PHD Comics), will be giving a science communications masterclass in Singapore this July. Organized by Asian Scientist Magazine, the public talk will be held on July 8, 2017 at Singapore Management University’s Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium.
“Over the last 20 years, PHD Comics has helped scientists and academics get through the tough times by finding the funny side of life in the lab,” said Dr. Cham, who started PHD comics while still a student at Stanford University. “It’s also helped to make scientists easier to relate to, and science itself seem less intimidating.”
Dr. Cham, who will be speaking about how to communicate challenging, technical concepts to a lay audience, has recently published We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe, a book explaining the many things we still don’t know about the cosmos, from dark matter to time travel and the Big Bang.
“Jorge is able to distill difficult concepts into comic-sized presentations; a valuable skill for any communicator,” said Dr. Juliana Chan, Editor-in-Chief of Asian Scientist Magazine “By bringing the best science communicators to Asia, we hope to help raise awareness of the need for accurate and engaging science outreach.”
Apart from the public talk on July 8, Dr. Cham will also be giving a speech to a closed-door audience at the second Asian Scientist Writing Prize ceremony, and making an appearance at a networking event on July 7.
Tickets for the science communication masterclass are available at here.
