Singapore Engineers Recognized At ASEAN Engineering Awards

Six engineering projects received the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Awards and five individuals were conferred the AFEO Honorary Fellowship.

AsianScientist (Dec. 6, 2016) – Six engineering projects and five distinguished individuals from Singapore were recognized at this year’s ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Awards 2016, held at Palawan, the Philippines last month.

The Awards, which salute engineering achievements and significant contributions to the engineering progress and the quality of life amongst the ASEAN countries, were presented at the 34th Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (CAFEO34) on November 23, 2016.

From Singapore, the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) nominated six projects to the AFEO awards. They are:

  • A Biophillic Waterway@Punggol – Innovative Floating Wetlands and Freshwater-Tolerant Mangroves by the Housing Development Board
  • Development of Semakau Landfill Phase II by the National Environment Agency
  • Galassia, the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) First Nanosatellite by NUS
  • The Future of Auditing: Early Detection & Prevention of Significant Trading Irregularities by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, the Institute for Infocomm Research and Group Audit, and DBS Bank Ltd
  • Highly Flexible and Wearable Sensors for Real-Time Healthcare Monitoring Applications by NUS
  • Seeing is Believing: from Microscope to Nanoscope by NUS and Singapore University of Technology and Design

Five distinguished Singapore engineers were also conferred the AFEO Honorary Fellowship title. They are:

  • Er. Chong Kee Sen, immediate past president, IES
  • Professor Quek Tong Boon, advisor, DSO National Laboratories; chief executive, National Robotics Program; and chief defense scientist, Ministry of Defense till June 2016
  • Professor Low Teck Seng, chief executive, National Research Foundation, Prime Minister’s Office
  • Mr. Chua Chong Kheng, deputy CEO, Land Transport Authority
  • Mr. Lee Fook Sun, president, Singapore Technologies Electronics Ltd
