HKU Quantum Scientist Becomes Asia’s First CIFAR-Azrieli Global Scholar

Dr. Giulio Chiribella was selected under a new international initiative to identify potential world leaders in research.

AsianScientist (Dec. 1, 2016) – Under a new international initiative to identify potential world leaders in research by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) and the Azrieli Foundation, Dr. Giulio Chiribella from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been selected as a CIFAR-Azrieli Global Scholar.

The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars program aims to support young innovators at a pivotal time in their careers. Each scholar will become part of a global network of leading researchers working in interdisciplinary areas such as clean energy, child and brain development, machine learning, quantum computing, and economics.

Chiribella, an associate professor at the HKU Computer Science Department, is among the first cohort of 18 CIFAR-Azrieli Global Scholars. They were selected from outstanding young scientists hailing from all over the world, who are considered rising stars in their fields of research. HKU is the first Asian institution featuring in the program.

Chiribella’s research explores the world of quantum information science, at the intersection of computer science, physics, and applied mathematics. His best known work, “Informational Derivation of Quantum Theory,” is a milestone in the foundation of quantum mechanics and sheds new light on the power of quantum computers. By identifying the working principles of quantum information, Chiribella’s research is pushing forward the development of new applications and new technologies in areas including data security and precision measurements.
