AsianScientist (Oct. 16, 2016) – Dr. Nicolas Plachta, principal investigator at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore, is one of three honorees to win the 2016 ASCB-Gibco Emerging Leaders Prize. The other winners are Maria Barna, an assistant professor at Stanford University, and Antonia Roll-Mecak, an investigator at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health.
Plachta was recognized for his work into resolving cell fate, shape, and position during development, especially for developing new live imaging technologies to analyze single cells in mouse embryos. In 2015, he was selected as an EMBO Young Investigator by the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), along with Dr. Khor Chiea Chuen at the Genome Institute of Singapore of A*STAR.
The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), in collaboration with Gibco by Thermo Fischer Scientific, awarded three cash prizes of US$3,000 each to honor emerging leaders in science. The Prize is for non-tenured faculty holding independent positions who are in the early phase of their career, and in the first R01 research grant renewal space or equivalent.
These prizes are part of a partnership between ASCB and Gibco to support excellence in science. Both ASCB and Gibco recognize the challenging times that up-and-coming leaders in scientific research face, and are determined to do everything possible to raise the visibility of the most promising young scientists.
