Singapore Launches Test Circuit For Self-Driving Vehicles

A new research center and test circuit may help kickstart the deployment of self-driving vehicles on Singapore roads.

AsianScientist (Aug. 16, 2016) – A new research center and test circuit may help kickstart the deployment of self-driving vehicles on Singapore roads.

The Land Transport Authority of Singapore and the JTC Corporation, in partnership with the Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore), have launched the Center of Excellence for Testing & Research of AVs (CETRAN).

The Center will spearhead the development of testing requirements for self-driving vehicles, as there are currently no existing international standards available. This would allow self-driving vehicles to be integrated with existing road traffic, which is an important step for widespread deployment of such vehicles.

These efforts will be supported by a 1.8-hectare test circuit, which provides a simulated road environment for the testing of self-driving vehicles.

The test circuit, which is expected to be operational in the second half of 2017, will also be open to industry players for the development and testing of their own SDVs as they work towards meeting the standards set by CETRAN.

NTU will lead research activities at CETRAN, operate the test circuit, and evaluate the SDV prototypes undergoing testing there.
