Australian Physicist Receives Top US Honor

Physicist Michelle Simmons has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for her contributions to quantum computing.

AsianScientist (Apr. 30, 2014) – Professor Michelle Simmons, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, will join a small group of Australians elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS).

A physicist based at the University of New South Wales, Prof. Simmons was elected for developing the world’s first smallest working transistor, a crucial component of a future quantum computer.

“We are working to achieve the ultimate in computer miniaturization – to develop components for the world’s first integrated circuit where all elements are constructed on the atomic scale,” said Prof. Simmons of her research.

The AAAS was founded in 1780, and its inductees include scientists such as Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.
