Japanese Unis Dominate Shanghai Jiao Tong A-Pac Rankings

Japanese universities continue to dominate the Asia-Pacific region in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities.

AsianScientist (Aug. 19, 2013) – The 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), released on Thursday by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, throws up no surprises from previous years.

Starting from a decade ago, more than 1,200 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 universities are published. Harvard University continues to top the list in 2013, followed by Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Cambridge, Caltech, Princeton, Columbia, Chicago and Oxford.

The best ranked universities in the Asia-Pacific region still come from Japan, namely the University of Tokyo (21st) and Kyoto University (26th) in Japan, and the University of Melbourne (56th) in Australia.

A total of 11 universities made it to the Top 500 list in 2013, among which King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, the University of Coimbra in Portugal, and the Catholic University of Korea in South Korea make their first appearance.
