AsianScientist (Apr. 11, 2013) – Led by Japan in first position, Asian Tiger economies continue to make progress in the higher education sector.
In the inaugural Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2013 released today, Japan’s University of Tokyo was named Asia’s top university, alongside 21 other Japanese institutions, the largest number of any country.
But Japanese universities should not rest on their laurels, said Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education World University Rankings, as neighboring South Korea and China were playing catch up.
“Evidence from the overall World University Rankings shows that the country is losing ground to its Asian rivals: its international network is too limited, and the funding available for its universities falls some way short of that being provided by its regional rivals,” he said.
National University of Singapore finished a close second, with an overall score of less than one point below the University of Tokyo, followed by The University of Hong Kong in third place.
China and South Korea were represented in fourth and fifth place by Peking University and Pohang University of Science and Technology.
Overall, the rankings were dominated by Asian Tiger nations – countries in East Asia such as Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, outshadowing South Asian neighbors such as India, which had just three institutions in the top 100 and none in the top 20.
The inaugural Asian university rankings were based on the 13 performance indicators by global data provider Thomson Reuters.
