AsianScientist (Jun. 25, 2012) – At a recent Governing Board meeting, Dr. Shreyans Kumar Jain was elected chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Tokyo center.
In May 2012, Dr Jain retired from his position of Chairman and Managing Director of both Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI), after more than four decades in the industry.
Jain was central to the engineering and commissioning of the first PHWR plant at Rajasthan and then subsequently at the Narora Atomic Power Station, which is India’s first standardized 220 MW PHWR.
Dr Jain has received the Indian Nuclear Society Award in 2005, fellowships from the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and the Indian Institute of Plant Engineers and honorary doctorates from the University of Mangalore and Satyabhama University of Chennai.
According to the WANO website, the non-profit organization “unites every company and country in the world with an operating commercial nuclear power plant to achieve the highest possible standards of nuclear safety.”
WANO has a corporate office in London and four regional centers – Tokyo, Moscow, Atlanta, and Paris.
Although WANO helps members through peer review, technical support, and access to a global library of operating experience, it is not a regulatory body, nor does it advise companies on issues such as initial reactor design selection.
