AsianScientist (Oct. 3, 2011) – India and Thailand plan to collaborate in the field of oceanography and earth science, in particular towards establishing more effective tsunami warning systems.
These topics were brought up today during the 8th Annual Meeting of Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum on “Science & Technology for the future of Humankind” in Tokyo by Ashwani Kumar, India’s Minister of State for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Planning, and his counterpart, Suraswadi Plodprasop, Thailand’s Minister for Science and Technology.
Thai minister Plodprasop expressed a deep appreciation for India’s weather forecasting capabilities and asked for regional scientific and technological collaboration in the field of weather forecasting and tsunami warning systems.
Dr. Kumar invited the Thai minister to further discussions with Indian earth scientists, and to visit the Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad, which houses the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Center (TEWS).
In other discussions, Dr. Kumar and Mr. Plodprasop discussed ways to improve road connectivity between India and Thailand and other adjoining countries, which they hoped would promote greater economic integration and stability in the Southeast Asian region.
