bioMérieux, Shanghai Institute To Develop Food Diagnostic Tests

Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences and bioMérieux have signed a strategic partnership to develop innovative diagnostic tests for microbiological quality control of food products.

AsianScientist (Apr. 4, 2011) – Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Science (SIBS), and in vitro diagnostics company bioMérieux signed a long-term strategic partnership last week to develop innovative diagnostic tests for microbiological quality control of food products produced in China and other countries.

Since 1992, bioMérieux has expanded its presence in China, with recent acquisitions of Meikang Biotech and Zenka, and a joint venture created in 2008 with Shanghai Kehua Bio-engineering.

Under the partnership, the Institute for Nutritional Sciences (INS), SIBS, and CAS will work with French and Chinese R&D teams from bioMérieux, focusing on different food-borne pathogens as well as contaminants such as hormones, a growing concern in food safety.

bioMérieux will collaborate with Dr. Wang Hui, who is the principal investigator and head of Food Safety Research Center at the INS, and contribute its expertise in food quality and safety control.

“We are very pleased to reinforce our scientific collaborations in China and to have the opportunity to work with one of the world’s leading research institutions to address the important public health issue of ensuring food safety,” stated Alexandre Mérieux, Corporate vice president, Industrial Microbiology, bioMérieux.

The SIBS and bioMérieux will also collaborate on the development of new requirements and high-quality food safety standards in China. This will help to establish a reference center for these standards that will provide education and build a network of centers throughout China and Asia.
