Sun received the 2023 HoAM Prize in engineering. He is a world-renowned engineer and a pioneer in the research of cathode materials for secondary batteries. He developed “concentration gradient cathode materials,” which contributed to the commercialization of electric cars with significantly increased driving range and lifespan. He introduced the core-shell structure which increases the energy density by increasing the nickel content at the center of a cathode particle while encapsulating the core particle with manganese, resulting in an extended lifespan and improved safety. Dr. Sun’s concentration gradient cathode material technology was transferred to domestic companies, directly contributing to cost reduction, increased driving range, and extended service life of electric cars. With the boom of secondary batteries in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market, Sun’s concentration gradient cathode technology has had a huge impact on both academia and industry.
