Katayama was one of the recipients of the 2022 L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Award for proposing a novel “black hole laser” design to observe Hawking radiation, a type of particle emitted outside of black holes. When applied to quantum computers, her work can further the realization of next- generation information processing and communications.
