Kankanamge is a recipient of the 2020 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award for Early-Career Women Scientists in the Developing World for her research on aquatic ecosystem conservation and pollution control. She is currently researching the effectiveness of restoring native plants to control invasive aquatic plants in river ecosystems—work that will help prevent ecosystem degradation. She is also studying the levels of heavy metals in edible fish and shellfish in Sri Lanka’s Batticaloa lagoon, a primary source of seafood for the local community.
