Cheng received the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award 2023 for her research on the interaction between aerobic rice and soil microbes. Her work seeks to uncover how aerobic rice adapts to warmer, drier conditions through microbial interactions, offering Malaysian farmers an alternative, sustainable farming strategy to boost self-sufficiency in rice production.
