Tan received the Anton Bruun Medal at the 33rd Assembly of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission in recognition of her decades of contributions to marine science and sustainable ocean governance. Her research on marine biodiversity, sea cucumbers and coastal ecosystems, alongside strong advocacy for community-based conservation, has advanced sustainable fisheries and strengthened Malaysia’s role in the global ocean science agenda.
