AsianScientist (Sep. 13, 2019) – Universities in Asia have put up a strong showing in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020. The institutions are ranked based on 13 metrics that give an indication of their performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
Japan, with 110 ranked universities, unseats the UK as the second most-represented country on the list, and is surpassed only by the US. Meanwhile, China has 81 ranked universities, making it the fourth most-represented nation.
China is also home to two of Asia’s top universities—Tsinghua University is ranked first in Asia and 23rd in the world, while Peking University is ranked second in Asia and 24th globally. Peking University’s rise is due to its higher scores in the three income per staff metrics, as well as the publications per staff measure.
Hot on the heels of the two Chinese universities is the National University of Singapore, ranked 25th overall. The other ranked institution from Singapore is Nanyang Technological University (NTU), tied for 48th spot with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US.
Leading the charge from South Korea is Seoul National University at 64th position, alongside five other South Korean universities in the top 200.
First-timers to the list are Brunei and Vietnam universities, represented by Brunei’s Universiti Brunei Darussalam (ranked 401-500) and Vietnam’s Hanoi University of Science (ranked 801-1,000) and Technology and Vietnam National University (1,001). Bangladesh also rejoins the table with University of Dhaka (1001+).
