Tokyo Tech & Tohoku University Take A Quantum (Computing) Leap

Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tohoku University will join forces to carry out basic and applied research in quantum computing.

AsianScientist (Aug. 3, 2018) – Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) and Tohoku University have established a joint center for quantum computing research, a field that has attracted attention for its potential to shorten processing time in complex tasks.

Tokyo Tech is a pioneer in quantum computing, having developed the fundamental concept of quantum annealing in 1998, which is widely used in commercial devices today. Tohoku University, on the other hand, has strong expertise in applied research on quantum annealing and related software sciences, actively cooperating with industry to develop quantum computing solutions to practical problems.

Combining the extensive experience of both organizations, researchers at the Quantum Computing Unit at Tokyo Tech’s Institute of Innovative Research (IIR) and the Q+HPC Data-Driven Social Infrastructure Development Base will collaborate to form a central base for interdisciplinary quantum computing research. They will also jointly organize the Quantum Annealing Research and Development Consortium, which aims to promote industry engagement.

At the the joint center, academic and industry specialists will work on theoretical research projects to do with quantum annealing, as well as apply the theories in software science and other applications.
