AsianScientist (July 13, 2017) – The National University of Singapore (NUS) is the top university in the Asia-Pacific, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine. The inaugural Asia-Pacific University Ranking analyzed 243 universities across East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania and places greater emphasis on young universities that are able to secure funding from industry.
“We are delighted that NUS has been recognized as Asia-Pacific’s top university in the latest ranking by Times Higher Education,” said NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan. “This accolade, together with the THE Asia University Ranking released earlier this year, strongly affirms our vision and long term strategy of building broad-based excellence across a comprehensive range of disciplines.
Tan explained that NUS is nurturing future-ready graduates and is prioritizing lifelong learning with its broad range of programs. The university remains committed to developing world-class research strengths across a diverse range of disciplines that enable society to tackle the complex problems of the future.
“We remain strongly focused on translating our research and pursuing innovation and entrepreneurship so as to contribute to economic and societal advancement in Singapore and the communities around us,” said Tan.
“The deep and broad impact of NUS’ high quality education and research has been achieved through the excellent work of our outstanding faculty and researchers, as well as our talented students. We are also very fortunate to have strong support from the Singapore government.”
“Higher education and research in the Asia-Pacific region is thriving and universities in this part of the world, including NUS, will play an increasingly important role in driving the transformation of this dynamic region and in addressing both the challenges and opportunities along the way,” Tan added.
According to Mr. Phil Baty, the editorial director of global rankings at THE, the new analysis from THE uses the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings but is adjusted to reflect the the mission and priorities of universities in the Asia-Pacific region.
“We are delighted to affirm NUS’ status as the leading institution in the region. We have already shown through other analyses that NUS is the leading Asian institution, but it is particularly impressive to see that NUS is also now more highly ranked than much more mature and established institutions from Australia too,” said Baty.
“The university is brilliantly poised to continue to strengthen at the heart of a major global knowledge hub, in the centre of the most dynamic regions of higher education and research in the world.”
