Food Security R&D Center Launched By CAS, John Innes Center

To tackle the global challenges of food security and sustainable healthcare, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has opened a joint research center with a UK partner institution.

AsianScientist (Nov. 11, 2016) – A new center for food security research has been jointly established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and John Innes Center (JIC) in the UK.

The Center of Excellence for Plant and Microbial Science (CEPAMS) is a collaboration between the two partners as well as the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) and the Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (SIPPE).

The Center brings together world-leading laboratories from the UK and China to tackle the global challenges of food security and sustainable healthcare. Its transnational research team will focus on the improvement of food crops and the production of high-value natural products from plants and microbes.

CEPAMS will open its first laboratory at IGDB in Beijing with the appointment of Dr. Bai Yang as its first group leader. Bai will focus his research on plant root-associated microbes and agricultural productivity. In total there will be three CEPAMS campuses, located in Beijing, Shanghai and Norwich.
