Yoichi Ando Appointed Professor Of Physics At University of Cologne

Leading topological materials expert Professor Yoichi Ando will move from Osaka University to a new appointment at the University of Cologne.

AsianScientist (Jun. 23, 2015) – Professor Yoichi Ando, previously at Osaka University in Japan, has been appointed professor of physics at the Institute of Physics II of the University of Cologne’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Ando was previously a professor at the department of Quantum Functional Materials at the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (ISIR) of Osaka University. He is a leading researcher in the area of topological materials and his research interests include topological insulators, topological semiconductors, unconventional superconductivity and spin currents.

His groundbreaking work on high-temperature superconductors has brought him international recognition and many awards. In 2014 alone, he received the Inoue Prize for Science and the Osaka Science Prize. He was moreover honored as a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher. His work has been published in leading scientific journals, such as Physics Review Letters, Science and Nature.

Professor Axel Freimuth, the rector of the University of Cologne, presented Ando with his certificate of appointment in the presence of Professor Ansgar Büschges, the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
