Peking’s Wang Jian Awarded Sir Martin Wood China Prize

Professor Wang Jian has won the Sir Martin Wood China Prize in recognition of his work in superconducting materials.

AsianScientist (Apr. 21, 2015) – Professors Li Shiyan and Wang Jian have been awarded the 2015 Sir Martin Wood China Prize. The prizes were given out on April 1, 2015, at the opening ceremony of the 14th National Seminar of Low Temperature Physics hosted by Professor Zhao Zhongxian, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Peking University’s Wang was awarded the 2015 Sir Martin Wood China Prize for Research of Physical Science in recognition of his achievements on the study of interface-enhanced superconductivity at the two-dimensional (2D) limit and exploration of topological superconductivity.

His team was the first to verify the graphene-like silylene-structured 2D superconducting crystal. This work offers a new platform to study 2D superconductivity in metal-semiconductor heterostructures. They also discovered superconductivity induced by hard point contact, revealing the possibility of topological superconductor.

The Sir Martin Wood China Prize was set up by the Oxford Institute to identify young scientists in China who have made great breakthroughs under the conditions of low temperature or high-intensity magnetic field. The prize of ¥100,000 is awarded every two years to one to three people.
