CAS Trials Industrial Production Of Antibacterial Stainless Steel

The antibacterial steel developed by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences could find applications in medical devices and implants.

AsianScientist (Apr. 22, 2015) – In collaboration with a steel production plant, researchers from the Institute of Metal Research (IMR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have successfully made a 40-ton scale production of antibacterial stainless steel.

Based on the research of IMR Professor Yang Ke’s research on copper-bearing steel with dual-phase structures, the steel is not only corrosion-resistant but also has a self-cleaning ability which makes it antibacterial.

Antibacterial stainless steel sheets with a width of 1200 mm and different thickness of 0.4-2.5 mm were produced. These antibacterial stainless steel sheets possess satisfied mechanical properties and showed excellent antibacterial performance under the inspection of Institute of Physical and Chemical Technology, CAS. In addition, they meet the state regulation on bio-safety for metal ions release and cytotoxicity under the inspection of Institute for Food & Drug Inspection of China.

China is currently the largest producer of steel in the world and also one of its main consumers. Currently, several manufacturers are cooperating with IMR to develop different antibacterial stainless products, including sinks, air conditioning trays, tablewares, washing machine drums, surgery devices, orthopedic implants, etc.
