AsianScientist (Mar. 17, 2015) – Asian Scientist Magazine founder and editor-in-chief, Assistant Professor Juliana Chan, has been elected by the World Economic Forum to the 2015 class of Young Global Leaders (YGL).
This year, 187 Young Global Leaders were selected for the Class of 2015. The inductees are recognized for their achievements and contribution to society, and for their commitment to shaping the future of the world.
Half of the YGL Class of 2015 comes from the private sector and half from the public sector; they include stakeholders from academia, arts and culture, civil society, government, media and not-for-profit organizations.
“I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to connect with this global community. Our mission at Asian Scientist Magazine, which has never wavered since we began in 2011, is to share the excellent scientific research taking place in Asia with the world,” said Chan, who is also a Nanyang Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.
The YGL Class of 2015 was drawn from a pool of over 2,000 candidates who were screened by a selection committee chaired by H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Candidates were evaluated according to specific criteria including their proven track record and commitment to society.
YGL alumni include Larry Page, co-founder and CEO, Google, USA; and Naoko Yamazaki, astronaut and mission specialist on the crew of STS-131 Discovery, Japan. Current and former YGLs include 11 heads of state and government, 10 heads of Fortune 500 companies, 15 UN Goodwill Ambassadors, three Olympic gold medalists and two Nobel Prize winners.
The YGL community has more than 900 active members, and they convene at an annual summit, held this year in Geneva, Switzerland, in August.
