Subra Suresh Named Member Of Chinese Academy Of Sciences

Prof. Subra Suresh, a distinguished Indian-American engineer and scientist, has been named a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Asian Scientist (Jan. 20, 2014) – Prof. Subra Suresh, a distinguished Indian-American engineer and scientist, has been named a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Membership in the Chinese Academy is the highest academic honor offered for science and technology in China. Prof. Suresh, who is president of Carnegie Mellon University, is one of only nine foreign members inducted this year.

Prof. Suresh was recognized for his scientific contributions in the field of materials science and engineering, including his work connecting nanomechanical cell structure to disease states.

He also was honored for his leadership in building a worldwide scientific and engineering research dialogue through the Global Research Council that was founded when he served as director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2010 to 2013.

Born in Chennai, India, Prof. Suresh was the first Asian-born scientist to lead NSF. Prior to that, he was the first Asian-born professor to lead one of the five schools at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), serving as dean of the school of engineering from 2007 to 2010.

Prof. Suresh will be fomally recognized during the Chinese Academy of Science’s General Assembly scheduled for June 2014 in Beijing.
