AsianScientist (Apr. 23, 2013) – NTU conferred an honorary doctorate of letters on His Excellency President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Republic of Indonesia on Monday, in recognition of his distinguished achievements and contributions to the university and to Indonesia.
President Yudhoyono is the first Indonesian Head of State to receive an honorary doctorate from a Singapore university.
NTU Chancellor and President of the Republic of Singapore, Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam, presided over the conferment ceremony at the Shangri-La Hotel, which was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam, Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat, Acting Minister for Social and Family Development and Senior Minister of State for Defense Chan Chun Sing.
Also present were Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto, Minister for Foreign Affairs Marty Natalegawa, Minister for Trade Gita Irawan Wirjawan and Minister for Defence Purnomo Yusgiantoro.
NTU Chairman Koh Boon Hwee and members of NTU Board of Trustees were also present, together with ambassadors, senior government officials, business leaders, NTU faculty, staff, students, and alumni at the ceremony.
The citation for President Yudhoyono read by NTU President, Professor Bertil Andersson, highlighted his links to NTU date back to 1999, when he first visited the then Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies (IDSS) while serving as the Armed Forces Chief of Territorial Affairs. Since then, he has encouraged close ties between the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) and the Indonesian Defense University as well as between RSIS and the Indonesian National Resilience Institute (LEMHANNAS).
President Yudhoyono’s sons Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono are both NTU alumni, having graduated with postgraduate degrees from RSIS.
