AsianScientist (Feb. 8, 2012) – Singapore’s Minister for Education Mr. Heng Swee Keat and U.S. Secretary of Education Mr. Arne Duncan met yesterday at Washington, D.C. to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for collaboration in education between the two countries.
This MOU builds on the first U.S.-Singapore MOU on education signed in 2002, which focused primarily on the teaching and learning of mathematics and science.
Extending the scope of collaboration from 2002, the 2012 MOU highlights three key areas of collaboration: teaching and learning of mathematics and sciences; teacher development and school leadership; and education research and benchmarking studies.
“Whether in the U.S. or Singapore, we all want our children to be well prepared for the future. We look forward to working closely with the U.S. on these two new areas – the development of teachers and school leaders and research and international benchmarking,” Mr. Heng said.
Since 2002, the U.S. and Singapore have engaged in a number of dialogues, sharing sessions, and projects in the teaching and learning of mathematics and science.
The 2002 MOU established a longstanding collaboration with the Dolan DNA Learning Center in New York. In 2009, a MOE delegation visited Washington to share the Singapore model method for learning mathematics, and to launch a book outlining its approach.
In training collaborations, Singapore’s National Institute of Education (NIE) and Columbia University’s Teacher’s College are launching a joint Masters of Arts in Leadership and Educational Change. The program will start taking in students from January 2013.
