India Announces Fellowships For South Asian Researchers

The 2018-India Science and Research Fellowship scheme fully funds 200 scientists from South Asia to carry out research at Indian academic institutions for up to six months.

AsianScientist (Oct. 16, 2017) – To attract top scientific talents from the South Asia region, the Indian government is providing fully-sponsored academic fellowships for doctoral students in science, engineering and medical fields to conduct research at Indian academic institutions.

Up to 200 travel slots will be made available annually under the 2018-India Science and Research Fellowship (ISRF) scheme, and candidates from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar and Nepal qualify. Selected scholars will receive funding for a period of up to six months.

The 2018-ISRF is modelled after an earlier partnership between the Institute of Biotechnology in Bangladesh and the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Delhi, where Bangladesh scientists regularly participate in Indian research projects. In return, Indian scientists supplied the expertise required to establish new laboratories in Bangladesh.

India’s Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan announced the fellowship at the India International Science Festival (IISF) in the southern Indian city of Chennai on October 13, 2017. Attending the event were Afghanistan’s Minister of Higher Education Abdul Latif Roshan and Bangladesh’s Minister of Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman. With the 2018-ISRF scheme, India further extends its current network of academic collaborations with more than 44 global partners.

“This would help in capacity building and will also foster research networks with Indian scientific institutions in these countries,” Vardhan told The Daily Star.
