India’s Cipla Chairman Dr. Yusuf K Hamied won the BioSpectrum Life Time Achievement Award for reducing the cost of healthcare in India. Cipla makes cheaper AIDS treatments and a record 70 million Salbutamol inhalers per year for just $2-3 each – 6-8 times cheaper than other parts of the world.
China’s Sinovac CEO, Weidong Yin, was awarded BioSpectrum Entrepreneur of the Year for producing the Influenza A H1N1 Vaccine during swine flu epidemic in 2009 and marketing it in under 87 days.

The BioSpectrum Product of the Year had joint winners in India’s Cipla’s Mother-Baby Pack (HIV) and Singapore’s WEB Biotechnology, Spyder.
Cipla’s Mother-Baby Pack contains the entire range of anti-retroviral drugs and antibiotics required by an HIV-infected mother starting from the 14th week of pregnancy until the 6th week after delivery. The pack helps prevent HIV transmission from mother-to-baby through improved compliance.
Spyder is the world’s smallest wireless ECG sensor and display that allows user to move around while their ECG imaging is constantly monitored. Launched in August 2010, Spyder has galloped its way into the clinics in Singapore and Malaysia.
Along with these jury awards, the Editor’s Choice Awards for Emerging Companies in Asia Pacific region went to Patrys, Australia; Vaxine, Australia; Pharmigene, Taiwan; Biogenica Scientific, Malaysia; Imgenex, India and LeadInvent, India.
This year, a BioSpectrum-BioSingapore Special Award was conferred onto AMRI Singapore for making a difference to the country’s life science industry by stepping up employment creation.
“Since its launch in Singapore in 2006, the BioSpectrum has attempted to bring an Asian flavor to the world of Life Sciences, dominated for over a century by globe-dominating life science companies, formed in the US and Europe,” said Narayanan Suresh, Editor of BioSpectrum Asia.
