Biocon Inaugurates New Research Center In Bangalore, India

Indian pharmaceutical company, Biocon, announced on Thursday the inauguration of its new integrated R&D center in Bangalore.

AsianScientist (Apr. 9, 2012) – Indian pharmaceutical company, Biocon, announced on Thursday the inauguration of its new integrated R&D center in Bangalore by Noble Laureate Professor Kurt Wuthrich.

The 200,000 sq ft Biocon Research Center (BRC) at Biocon Park will be equipped with capabilities in molecular biology, biologics process sciences, formulation research, and preclinical and clinical development.

“I will keenly watch the outcome of innovation from this center as I see a lot of promise in the scientific talent at Biocon,” said Prof. Wuthrich during the inauguration ceremony.

The facility is expected to hire over 300 scientists. An independent quality group at BRC will ensure compliance to Good Laboratory Practices and international regulatory guidelines for developing ‘best in class’ biologics and biosimilars.

Gracing the occasion were scientific leaders Prof. C. N. R. Rao, Honorary President, Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCSAR); Prof. P. Balaram, Director Indian Institute of Science (IISc); and Prof. K. Vijayraghavan, Director National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS).

Biocon has also dedicated a research wing at BRC in honor of Prof. Rao, which was also unveiled on the occasion.

This will allow cross pollination of ideas across groups that will breed a new culture of innovation and enable us to deliver on our vision,” said Dr. Abhijit Barve, President Research and Development, Biocon.
